Treatment

My approach for this video will be to incorporate Japanese graphic design and typography into the filmed footage featuring Yoshi.

The footage will contain a combination of close ups and full body shots interchanging with each other.

The close ups will feature the animated type, moving across the screen with Yoshi following the captions with her eyes as if she's reading the type as it moves.

The full body shots will have Yoshi dancing and will contain colorful backgrounds, inspired by the work of different Japanese graphic designers such as Tanaka Ikko and companies such as The designers Republic. This will be done by filming on a blue screen, and by using footage filmed at a live performance by the Real Dolls.

Background Graphics - Equalizer

This background will be animated to act like a graphic equalizer. The colored columns will move up and down in time with the beat of the song, as Yoshi performs her dance routine in the foreground.

Japanese Typography

The typographic animation for my piece will be based on Japanese typography, the style of the example below is to Kitsch for my piece so I'll be looking into more techno/electronic styles.

Japanese Graphic Design - Tanaka Ikko

Below is a collection of works by the Japanese graphic designer 'Tanaka Ikko'. My aim for this part of my research was to establish a theme for the visual style of my piece and to establish a strong concept for the video itself. This wasn't to be the overall basis for my idea but helped me to explore and look into other areas of Japanese design. The very first image, showing a exhibition installation was essential with my inspiration for a situation in which to have Yoshi (Real Dolls) performing her dance routine.

Tokyo Streets & Buildings

Here's some visual research into Tokyo. Here I have looked into the futuristic style of Tokyo as a city so I can capture some of the atmosphere for my video. The buildings in the city are typical in my opinion of the forward thinking and ingenuity of the Japanese.

Research - Designers Republic

Here are a collection of images I found during my research into a company called the Designers Republic. I chose to research this company due to their use of futuristic and Japanese style imagery, which are central to my concept for the Real Dolls piece.
